CASS explained

CASS certification and USPS address quality, explained

What CASS certification is, why automation prices depend on it, and what each USPS address product adds to your data.

CASS™

What is CASS certification?

CASS™ (Coding Accuracy Support System) is the U.S. Postal Service program that tests address-matching software. It was designed with the mailing industry to improve the accuracy of the Five-Digit ZIP Code, ZIP + 4, delivery point and carrier route codes that appear on mailpieces.

It matters for your postage: according to USPS, any mailing claimed at an automation price must be produced from address lists properly matched and coded with CASS-certified address matching methods. MaxCASS Plus is CASS Certified. USPS CASS program.

ZIP + 4®

Complete, correct ZIP + 4 codes

The USPS ZIP + 4 Product is the reference file that assigns the correct ZIP + 4 Code to a physical address. MaxCASS Plus adds missing ZIP + 4 codes, fixes typos and formats every address to USPS standards, so each piece qualifies for the best rates it can. USPS ZIP + 4 Product.
  • Missing ZIP + 4 codes added
  • Street and city misspellings corrected
  • Street suffixes and formatting standardized

Built-in USPS products

DPV®, LACSLink® and SuiteLink®, integrated

A ZIP + 4 match alone doesn’t prove an address gets mail. MaxCASS Plus integrates three USPS products that go further.

DPV® (Delivery Point Validation)

Confirms whether a ZIP + 4 coded address is a known USPS delivery point and flags addressing issues that may hinder delivery. USPS DPV

LACSLink®

Updates addresses converted after 911 emergency systems were implemented, usually rural-style to city-style, plus renamed or renumbered streets. USPS LACSLink

SuiteLink®

Adds known suite numbers to business addresses identified as highrise defaults, so USPS can delivery-sequence them. USPS SuiteLink

RDI™ option

Residential or business?

The USPS Residential Delivery Indicator (RDI™) tells you whether an address is residential or business. USPS designed it specifically for parcel shipping, where that distinction is especially valuable. MaxCASS Plus offers RDI as an option. USPS RDI.

After CASS

CASS first, then Move Update

USPS requires CASS processing on a list before Move Update processing, so addresses are standardized before they’re matched to change-of-address data. MaxCASS Plus includes a certified NCOALink® interface through the MaxMover add-on, so both steps can run together. Learn more about MaxMover NCOALink processing.

Why it matters

The undeliverable mail problem

The USPS estimates that 4–5% of all mail is undeliverable as addressed. Every one of those pieces was printed and paid for. CASS processing with DPV, LACSLink and SuiteLink is how you get that number as low as possible, and it’s what MaxCASS Plus features are built to do. See the USPS UAA mail statistics.
